What is a salon?
A salon is, at heart, a conversation — one held under the roof of an inspiring host, partly to amuse and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of all who take part.

A short history
From the drawing rooms of Europe to a table near you
The salon flourished in 17th- and 18th-century France, where intellectuals, writers and artists gathered in private drawing rooms to debate the questions of the day. Hosted often by remarkable women, these evenings shaped literature, politics and the Enlightenment itself.
The International Academic Salon carries that tradition forward. We are not a lecture hall and not a conference — we are an evening among friends, old and new, where a single good question can change the course of the night.

How a gathering unfolds

An inspiring host
Each gathering is hosted privately — in a member’s home or a venue with a story. The host sets the tone for the evening to come.

A talk, or two
A guest speaker or a member opens a subject — from CRISPR to maritime security, from political philosophy to the art of composing.

Dinner & conversation
Over dinner the conversation turns. Disagreement is welcome; curiosity is the only requirement. This is the heart of the salon.

Culture & company
Music, art, an excursion the next day. The salon is as much about delight and friendship as it is about ideas.
